2001 - 2002 : National Centre for Social Research

Systems strategist for National Centre for Social Research looking at information and systems requirements for new Department of Work and Pensions Project on the Disabled Welfare to Work initiative.

1999 - 2000 : EU "Best Practices in Data Management Project"

Technical author for the European Union "Best Practices in Data Management Project - Aesopian". Responsible for producing best practice guidance for data management, data quality, data warehousing, and repositories.

1999 - To date : GlaxoWellcome Ltd.

Systems development, data quality and technical architecture consultant for GlaxoSmithKline Ltd. Involving in analysing and quality assuring the database design for a new systems development to support chemical certificates of analysis for pharmaceutical products using Oracle Designer 2000 and VB5. Responsible for the development of the development architecture standards used in the project as a whole. Responsible for reviewing / QA'ing the resultant data model and database design. Responsible for defining the data migration strategy for the extraction and storage of the data including improving its accuracy, veracity and completeness. Developed a data quality training programme for Glaxo in accordance with this work which has been run a number of times for Glaxo staff.

1997 - To date : EU DG III (Electronic Commerce)

Rapporteur for EU DG III (Knowledge and Information Management) calls for proposals in Brussels. This includes consolidating the proposals for knowledge and information management for the 5th Framework Call For Proposals (E-commerce and Knowledge Management - summer 1999) into order of priority for funding based upon technical, business and economic criteria.

1997 - To date : EU DG XIII Rural and Urban Telematics section

Technical Consultant and systems auditor for the EU DG XIII Rural and Urban Telematics section in Brussels. This involves full authority to audit systems and, where necessary produce reports to determine their future. This includes recommending both their termination and alteration with respect to technical viability and feasibility. (The resultant findings of all projects I have audited under this rolling consultancy assignment have always been fully accepted and not contested in any way by any project which has been in receipt of such assessments.)

1997 - To date : SME

Producer and presenter of ISO 9000 quality assurance seminars for SMEs and large Plc's.

1997 - 1998 : Department of Transport

Technical Architect and Assessor for Year 2000 compliance functionality for software products (at version level) and PCs for the Department of Transport, Environment and The Regions and the UK Hydrographic Office.

1997 - 1998 : Codd & Date Limited

Author and presenter of Data Quality and Advance Data And Object Modelling Seminars for Codd & Date Limited.

1996 - 1998 : Abbey National

Data Management consultant for Abbey National. Responsible for setting up a Data Administration function in Scottish Mutual referencing corporate standards development and Year 2000 compliance issues to support corporate Abbey National and Scottish Mutual project specific initiatives. This involved introducing EDIFACT standards compliant approaches to data analysis and documentation in reference to the local (Scottish Mutual) Bachman CASE tool and then relating the data models to the Corporate Data Model of Abbey National (Oracle Designer 2000). Responsible currently for specifying a structure for a unified data and process management function in Abbey National under the Information Resource Management initiative. This involves ensuring the Designer 2000 information can be managed and available for re-use across other case tool boundaries. Also responsible for specifying development support for the Scottish Mutual development of process modelling under Bachman. Responsible for technically auditing a new general insurance systems development for National & Provincial and highlighting Data Quality issues requiring consideration within the design.

1996 - 1997 : Ministry Of Defence

Information Management consultant with the Ministry Of Defence with respect to the specification of systems support for the Cost Forecasting department in Bristol and London.

1996 - 1998 : St John Ambulance Brigade in Berkshire

Data Management and systems development consultant for the St John Ambulance Brigade in Berkshire. Responsible for delivering a corporate data model capable of integrating the existing and new planned functions in preparation for the changes to the Charities Act, which came into effect in January 1997 and to cater for all Year 2000 issues impacting upon current and future IS / IT systems. Chosen and defined application architecture is Window (3.51) NT and SQL Server with Visual Basic front end.

1994 - 1996 : Alliance of International Tourists (AIT) in Geneva

Data Management consultant to the Alliance of International Tourists (AIT) in Geneva. Responsible for integrating and migrating eastern European countries into an international import / export regulation system for travellers and businesses.

1995 : PIAFE Methods Project

Methods consultant to the PIAFE Methods Project funded by DG X of the European Union on youth information provision across Europe. The project is managed (from the customer side) by the National Youth Agency in the UK, with partners in France and The Republic Of Ireland. The project is using Euromethod as its overall systems development framework.

1995 : CCTA (UK Government Centre for Information Systems)

Consultant to the CCTA (UK Government Centre for Information Systems). Engaged to evaluate the use and applicability in the UK of the Euromethod proposals for systems development and procurement in the Single European Market.

1995 : UNICORN Migration Project

Consultant to the UNICORN Migration Project sponsored by DG III (TEDIS) of the European Union to design a set of Interactive-EDI Messages (IEDI) using object oriented techniques. Responsible for analysis and documentation (CASE) issues.

1995 : Atkins Wootton Jeffreys (a division of WS Atkins)

Consultant to Atkins Wootton Jeffreys (a division of WS Atkins) to provide advice and guidance on EU related 4th Framework Project funding applications in terms of data and systems analysis issues.

1995 : Simplification Of Trade Procedures Board (SITPRO)

Consultant to the Simplification Of Trade Procedures Board (SITPRO) on object orientation use for data analysis supporting the development of Interactive EDIFACT (I-EDI) messages.

1994 : The AA on a joint EU DRIVE project

Project Manager for The AA on a joint EU DRIVE project (DG XIII of the EU) focusing on dynamic traffic management information in the Paris - London corridor. Including the Channel Tunnel link as well as ferry companies. This focused on the viability of Radio Data System (RDS) standards as well as routing system information targeted at the EDIFACT environment.

1993 - 1996 : CIRT Project

Project Manager of the DG XXIII (Tourism) funded project "CIRT" dealing with the networked data exchange of general tourist information across Europe. Responsible for project management, analysis, design (including architecture specification), and documentation processes.

1993 - 1994 : The Royal Bank of Scotland

Consultant in Data Administration standards development for The Royal Bank of Scotland. Standards attention focused on the development of data naming, typing and classification standards for the use in systems developments using CASE products and data dictionaries.

1992 - 1998 : DG XIII of The EU

Technical consultant, advisor and auditor for DG XIII of The EU in Luxembourg on the use of EDIFACT in transnational data communication.

1992 - 1995 : Wolters Kluwer, Amsterdam

Consultant to Wolters Kluwer, Amsterdam, Netherlands with respect to the development of a networked international freight management and control system of goods transfer and insurance in terms of EDIFACT message development and use.

1992 - 1994 : The AA

Advisor to the AA General Manager of Travel and Information Services on joint AIT (Alliance of International Tourists) club activities and European Union (EU) travel and transport initiatives.

1992 - 1994 : ATIS Business Unit

General Manager of the ATIS Business Unit. This was a joint AIT (Association of International Tourists) information system sponsored by the AA (UK), ADAC (Germany) and ANWB (Netherlands). Had the strategic and the technical responsibility for DP policy and business development (marketing and product development). This included technical architecture decisions (on matters such as the use and development of CDI and other multimedia products).

1991 - 1994 : Prudential Assurance Company

Data Management consultant to The Prudential Assurance Company (PAC). Engaged to set up a Data Administration function. This included getting a Data Charter signed off by the IT Director on the Board as well as defining an Enterprise Data Model for The Prudential. Analysed and chose CASE / Repository and Methods aspects of the tasks as well as producing DA documentation and naming standards for use across development projects and in the business. Tool / Technique set chosen was SSADM with LBMS Systems Engineer CASE product. Also involved in evaluation of eIE (object oriented analysis / design approach) from James Martin.

Then engaged to provide advice, guidance, training and technical assistance in the implementation of an Architecture Management Function. This focused on standards and procedures and the rules governing the development of the business architecture. The final deliverable was the production of a set of architecture maintenance procedures. These linked the applications, data, process, technical, organisation and locations architectures together for re-engineering the business as a whole. The production of an architecture repository model was part of this set of final deliverables. The project focused upon the development of a migration strategy for the applications and data in core PAC business systems.

1993 : Bain Clarkson (a member of the Inchcape Group)

Consultant in Data Administration standards and CASE assessment at Bain Clarkson (a member of the Inchcape Group). Consultancy advice included CASE tool specification (Systems Architect chosen) as well as the definition of goals and objectives of the Information Resource Management function in the organisation. Final outcome of this work was an IRM Charter.

1990 : The AA - DTI Demonstrator Project for X400 Messaging

Consultant on the DTI Demonstrator Project for X400 Messaging within a mixed DP environment for the Automobile Association. Responsible for defining the rules for and the analysis of the Security Architecture Data Model for the project using object oriented data modelling techniques and for providing a training course on Object Oriented Data Model Development and Object Oriented Analysis.

1990 : The AA - Inventory Management System for IT equipment

Analysis Phase Team Leader for The AA in the development of an organisation wide Inventory Management System for IT equipment. This work was completed in December 1990 with the production of a Functional Requirements Specification for the new system.

1988 - 1992 : AIT and ATIS

Senior consultant and DP representative on a European development project. This was a joint AIT (Association of International Tourists) touring information system (ATIS). Responsible for the strategic and the technical aspects of the development approach for a pan-European Project. This included the definition and co-ordination of all analysis and CASE / repository documentation standards and procedures.

Responsible for the setting up of the distributed Data Management function and rules for the ATIS project. This involved defining data analysis & administration standards and documentation and dictionary interface rules between the project members and the levels of analysis and documentation. It included version control and distributed work responsibilities for the project. This responsibility applied to both the logical analysis and the design aspects of the project.

1989 - 1991 : The AA and ATIS

Interface Project Manager for the AA on the ATIS Project, responsible for Data Management, Systems Development Planning and team management in the UK. Also responsible for the political liaison with the EEC on the project.

1989 : Extel Financial

Consultant for Extel Financial, the Stock Exchange data user, on the standards and definition of Data Administration for the organisation.

1989 : British Tourist Authorities BRAVO system

Auditor of the British Tourist Authorities BRAVO system for integrated hotel and travel bookings. This was to assess the technical structure of the proposed implementation.

1989 : The AA

Data and systems auditor of the existing Network Configuration System for The AA.

1989 : Time Manager International

Producer of a functional requirements study for Time Manager International. This resulted in the specification of a new distributed systems development for a new marketing system for TMI.

1988 : Institute of Internal Auditors of Singapore

Lecturer and author of material on database technology and database auditing techniques for the Institute of Internal Auditors of Singapore.

1987 : The AA

Senior analyst and team leader for the development and implementation of a Company Membership Marketing System for The AA. Responsible for the development of the Functional Requirements Specification and selection of production system software. Data analyst on the Command & Control system for vehicle assistance and breakdown management. The analysis specified the data structure and model for the implementation of a system with over 8000 terminals (in vehicle units) as well as five regional centres supporting the needs of over 8,000,000 AA members for breakdown assistance.

1987 : Coventry (Lanchester) Polytechnic

Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at Coventry (Lanchester) Polytechnic. Main teaching responsibilities were associated with the MSc and BSc courses within the department in terms of data and functional analysis.
